Concrete structures are usually designed for a service life of 50 to 100 years. However, due to their exposure to all forms of aggressive elements during their service life they often need to be refurbished several times. The need for refurbishment arises not only because of the environment but also due the poor quality of surface concrete produced at the construction stage. The surface is porous with reduced strength and contaminated by release agent residues. A slight increase of investment costs at this stage can enormously reduce or even negate the need for such refurbishment costs.
Whereas concrete surfaces produced without Zemdrain® can show visible degradation already after less than 10 years, which means that at least two refurbishments will be necessary during their overall service life. Independent test results show that no refurbishment costs at all are to be expected within a time period of 50 years when using the formliner Zemdrain®.
Zemdrain® cast surfaces have much improved durability characteristics that increase the resistance of the concrete surface to all forms of environmental attack. Together with the improved early age curing and the absence of release agent contamination, the expected service life of all structures is increased.
